Tyler & Rachel

Despite being a die-hard New Yorker, I love Boston. Well, everything except driving there and their baseball team, but Boston really does pack a lot of charm and a guaranteed good time.

I got to meet up with Rachel and Tyler in the North End for their engagement photos. The timing worked out perfectly because we were already up in the Cape for the annual Huie vacation so I was able to scoot over to Boston pretty easily. We immediately hit it off and started exploring the neighborhood together.

I asked them what spots they had in mind and after informing me that the vibe they were going for with wedding planning was “elegant”, they suggested a “great alley and parking garage” as potential spots to shoot in. Now these two don’t normally go hand-in-hand, and if I didn’t know any better, I’d probably be sketched out. But away we went, and I must say, I’ve NEVER seen a parking garage look better than the one we hit. The alley was pretty dope, too.

The views up there boasted the skyline with a perfect golden hour to boot! A total hidden gem, and a bit of a nice reprieve from the more touristy things that people usually do in the city. We had such a great time together adventuring around and chatting about their favorite things to do there. One of the other great things that the North End has to offer is amazing Italian food, which was one of my other favorite quotes that these two cuties left me with— when I asked what they loved the most about living in that neighborhood, they replied “that it always smells like garlic when we open our windows!” I mean, girl after my own heart, right!?

Boulder Colorado Engagement Photography

Olivia and Tim's Engagement in Boulder, Colorado | Eagle Trailhead Hiking Path | Adventure Engagement Photographer in CO | Rocky Mountain Weddings | Apollo Fields Photographers

Sometimes I feel like our identities are torn between New York and Colorado. It’s hard because I have a serious love for both states but for completely different reasons:

My NY side loves the art scene, ethnic food, the fast paced lifestyle, the ocean, and getting to dress in all black.

My Colorado side loves the mountains, the sense of adventure, the laid back culture, local beer, and getting to wear flannel.

Sometimes, I feel like we’re supposed to choose between these two worlds, but then I remember that we have intentionally carved out a lifestyle that allows us to wear both hats instead of picking only one or the other. It’s pretty damn cool and I think we are so lucky to be able to work in such epic places. What is extra cool for me, though, is when both of my worlds collide. Olivia and Tim’s engagement session was the perfect example of this.

Here’s the backstory… Olivia’s mom is one of the owners and the head trainer of the barn that I board my horse at in Northport, NY. Olivia and Tim recently relocated to the wild, wild west and just like that—BOOM—my worlds collide!

I love showing people around some of our favorite Colorado digs, so this was especially fun for me because they haven’t had a lot of time to explore the front range yet. We hit Eagle Trailhead for golden hour, and it did not disappoint.

Olivia and Tim have such a sweet and fun way about them. It made my job VERY easy because I barely had to pose or direct! It was more of, “okay so let’s go into this light and then just hang out together” click-click-click-click. It felt more like us all chilling by the foothills swapping war stories about turning my horse out than a formal session (AKA the dream for me). And trust me, there are always plenty of stories about Limbo to go around— one of Olivia’s first things she said to me was how my horse had a major meltdown with her when she was bringing him back to the barn once. Oh, Bimbo… he’s so adorable sometimes!

Harry Potter Themed Wedding at The Highlands Ranch Mansion

Micaela & Shane’s Wedding | Harry Potter Themed Weddings | Highlands Ranch Mansion | Highlands Ranch Colorado | Apollo Fields Wedding Photographers

I wish I could rate my couples online because these guys would be 5 stars across the board! First of all, they were a photographer’s dream - super easy to work with, very kind, easy going, and also GORGEOUS (the icing on the cake right). But most of all, they were a super down-to-earth easy going couple that just loved each other.

I’ve shot a few weddings at the Highlands Ranch Mansion so I have a few spots that are my go-to’s for that amazing golden light. I vividly remember getting ants in my pants during the ceremony because we were close to losing the golden light (they had a late summer ceremony so the light was absolutely DREAMY during the ceremony and we were going to lose it fast). Their officiant announced them as husband and wife, they kissed, celebrated down the aisle, and I immediately scooped them away for a few natural light romantics.

Micaela and Shane were such good sports about it, too. I knew that if I didn’t steal them for * five minutes * that we would lose that epic light and guests would want to storm them so it would be impossible afterwards. I always joke that golden hour is my catnip, but for a synesthetic photographer, it really makes my skin tingle and I just get totally high on it. These guys rolled with all of that energy and gave me the best five minutes that I could have ever asked for. I loved these shots because I felt like we just punched so much love and emotion into – literally – the last few moments of light and the photos are so indicative of that.

After the ceremony and epic romantics, I was able to take the back seat a little and snag relaxed family shots, cocktail hour, and intros. Micaela and Shane did a great job balancing a ‘themed’ wedding without feeling like a college party (haha). They are both huge Harry Potter fans and did such a tasteful job of showing this off and having fun with something that has shaped their relationship. Their friends and family were so much fun and I really loved working with this awesome couple!
